CSE CONTEST: COMPUTATIONAL THINKING 2009
The main purpose of this contest is to encourage high school students to consider pursuing further computer science related studies, e.g., as computer science or computer engineering majors in college. We want to hold a contest that will be fun, while exposing students to aspects of computing that they might not have previously considered. We also hope students will consider Texas A&M when choosing where to come to college!

The focus of this year's contest will be on computational thinking. More specifically, it will be on the application of computational thinking to solving simple real-life problems. The term "computational thinking" refers to a general attitude that enables the application of computer science concepts in all aspects of human life. Observing and analyzing physical, biological, societal, and other complex systems to derive abstractions, to model, and to simulate, while using concepts from computer science can be broadly considered computational thinking. In this year's contest, teams will "design" a solution to a simple computational task by putting together everyday objects in a certain arrangement to perform that specific function. 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. HRBB.

The First Workshop on Genome Bioinformatics: Exploring the Current Landscape of High-Throughput DNA Sequencing and Analysis

This workshop will be held every Thursday from May 28 to July 30, 2009. A small group of scientists is being organized at Texas A&M University to explore the current computational landscape for Genome Bioinformatics from a life scientist's perspective. The goal is to form a small and dynamic learning group that will share and spread critical expertise in these areas. Initially, we will emphasize all aspects related to next-generation DNA sequencing technologies such as the Illumina and the Roche 454. For this, we will: 1) Test drive commercial and Open-Source software. 2) Report and discuss what we like and dislike about the software. 3) Review Unix commands and "pipelines" related to data manipulation and analysis. 4) Review and test a series of other "Open Source" genomic software solutions like Galaxy. For a detailed schedule please visit this link.
